YEAR AT A GLANCE 2022-2023 READING Most of the 5th Grade Reading Curriculum focuses on teaching students to understand and develop ideas about the texts that they read. Fifth Grader learn to support their ideas using specific details from books, and are expected to think carefully about quotes, facts, and events to develop opinions about a text and explain it. Students practice this as they read texts together as a class and independently. and I, as the teacher, will often show them specific strategies they can use to do this.. Students will use the text book, along with our chosen Fifth Grade Novels. SPELLING Students will be tested each week on a new set of words. Students will broaden their word bank of correctly spelled words enabling them to express their ideas clearly in writing. The goal is to apply the spelling rules learned to all subject areas. MATH-GRADE 5 Fifth Grade Students concentrate on place values through millions. They work with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to solve multi-step word problems. They learn about factors of a whole number and exponents to express powers of 10. They collect and analyze information from a variety of graphs and number patterns and understand the concept of mean, median, and mode with data sets. Fifth grade students continue expanding their understanding of fractions such as reading, writing, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. The students also work on decimals such as reading, writing, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and comparing fractions. The students write and interpret mathematical expressions using symbols. They practice measuring weights, liquids, volume, length, and area.
